A 150KB minimum
150KB minimums are set by some certificate and verification systems that expect a scan of reasonable resolution. A phone photo that has been resized for chat typically lands between 50 and 120KB and gets bounced.
Better than padding?
- If you still have the original photo, use it. A bigger real file is better than a padded one.
- If the original is gone, pad here.
- For a size ceiling instead, see Compress to 150KB.
Watch for
- Upload widgets that re-compress files. Try a different browser if the final size changes.
Why the size reads differently on different devices
This page pads to 150 × 1,024 = 153,600 bytes. Windows file properties shows that as 150 KB (153,600 bytes). Many phone file managers count 1KB as 1,000 bytes and will show the same file as about 154 KB. Both numbers are at or above 150, so a minimum is met either way. Only a ceiling can disagree, which is why this page is for floors and the 150KB compress page is for ceilings.

Which formats work for a 150KB target?
JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC files can be selected. The result is saved as a JPG.

Yes. The padding is invisible filler, and a JPG keeps its pixels. A PNG or other format is first re-saved as a JPG.
