Reduce Image Size in KB
A plain-language guide to cutting image size in KB, with a ready tool.
Advanced (optional): exact pixels or minimum KB
Many forms ask for pixels as well as KB. Leave empty if yours does not. Examples are common sizes only – always use the size your form states.
✅ Done! Your images are ready
Why is my photo so many KB?
A modern phone camera records 12 million pixels or more, and even after JPG compression that is 3–8 MB. A form box that needs 50 or 200KB is asking you to remove 95% or more of the data. That is possible because most of it is detail the screen cannot show at that size.
KB, MB and pixels
- File size: storage, in KB or MB. 1MB is about 1,000KB (1,024 in binary units).
- Pixels: width × height. More pixels usually means a bigger file.
- Quality: the JPG setting. Lower means smaller and softer.
The three levers, in order
- Crop away what you do not need.
- Lower quality a little. Most people cannot see the change down to about 70%.
- Reduce pixels only if the first two are not enough.
This tool applies levers two and three automatically for the number you type. Type the limit, press the button and compare Before and After in the result.
Still unsure which setting? Read resize vs compress.
