Half a megabyte

500KB is a limit you meet on email forms, support tickets and some CMS fields. It keeps around 1600 pixels of width in most photos, which is crisp on a phone and acceptable on a desktop monitor.

Example. A 6 MB holiday photo typically drops to a few hundred KB with no visible change at normal viewing size. You only notice the difference when zooming to 200% or more.

When 500KB is the right call

  • Attachments to support or application emails with a cap per file.
  • Blog posts where you want sharp images but quick loading.
  • Photos that include text, such as screenshots of an error message.

Avoid these

  • Compressing a screenshot with lots of flat colour; PNG may be smaller. Check the Before and After sizes.
  • Picking 500 for a mobile-only page. Smaller images load faster on cellular data.

Questions about: Compress Image to 500KB

Is 500KB too big for a website?

For a single hero image it is acceptable; for many images on one page it adds up. Aim lower for galleries.

Does the tool keep EXIF data?

When the tool re-encodes a photo, camera metadata such as location is not carried over. A JPG that is already under your limit is returned unchanged, metadata included, so remove location data yourself if that matters.

Is 500KB the same as 0.5 MB?

Roughly. Strictly 0.5 MB is 512KB in binary units. The tool stays under 500KB either way.

About the Compress Image to 500KB tool

Use this page to get an image to 500KB or less, a frequent limit for web uploads, product listings and email attachments. The tool finds the highest JPG quality that fits under your limit, so large photos shrink while staying clear on screen.
