Signature files are tiny on purpose

A signature is just dark lines on white, so it compresses far better than a photograph. At 10KB it is realistic to keep strokes sharp, as long as the picture is small. The 140 × 60 pixel chip is a commonly used size for signature boxes, but use the pixel size your form states.

Example. A signature photographed at 3000 × 1500 pixels is about 800KB. Crop it to the signature, set the size to 10 and enter width 140 and height 60; the file usually drops to a few KB with the lines clearly visible.

How to capture a clean signature

  • Sign with a black or dark-blue pen on plain white paper, with no lines.
  • Photograph in daylight, directly from above, without your shadow on the paper.
  • Crop close to the signature with a thin margin on each side.

Common mistakes

  • Using a pencil or light-blue pen. Thin pale strokes vanish after compression.
  • Cropping too loosely; the signature then shrinks to a few pixels in the final image.
  • Choosing “Stretch” for the shape. It distorts the signature; use Crop or white borders.
