How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Any Device

By the CompressPicOnline team · Updated October 19, 2026 · All guides

If you have ever sent a photo from an iPhone to a Windows computer, an older Android phone or a website upload form and found that it would not open, you ran into the HEIC format. This guide explains what HEIC is, why Apple uses it, and the easiest ways to convert HEIC to JPG for free, including a private method that works in your browser without uploading anything.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a photo format based on the HEVC video codec. Apple made it the default camera format on iPhones starting with iOS 11. A HEIC file can hold the same image quality as a JPG at roughly half the file size, and it also supports features such as 16-bit colour, depth information and Live Photos. For people with thousands of photos, saving storage is a real advantage.

Why HEIC causes problems

The trouble is compatibility. Many Windows PCs need an extra codec to show HEIC images. Social networks, job portals, e-commerce uploaders and printing services often accept only JPG or PNG. Older Android devices and some editing programs cannot open HEIC at all. JPG, in contrast, has worked everywhere for decades, so converting is the quickest fix.

Method 1: Convert in your browser (recommended)

  1. Open the CompressPicOnline compressor.
  2. Press Select Images and choose one or more .HEIC files. You can select an entire batch.
  3. Choose a quality level. The default 92% keeps photos sharp and still shrinks them.
  4. Press Compress All Images Now. Every HEIC photo is converted to JPG and compressed in the same step.
  5. Download each file or the full ZIP.

Because the conversion runs locally in your browser, your pictures are never uploaded to our servers. That matters for family photos and documents.

Method 2: Change the iPhone camera format

If you do not want HEIC files in future, open Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay in HEIC, so use Method 1 for those. Be aware that JPG files are larger, so your storage will fill faster.

Method 3: Let iOS convert when transferring

When you copy photos to a Mac or PC, go to Settings > Photos and, under Transfer to Mac or PC, select Automatic. iOS then converts HEIC to a compatible format when needed. If you share through email or Messages, the Photos app also offers an option to send as a compatible format when you tap Options.

What happens to quality?

HEIC to JPG is a conversion between two compressed formats, so some quality loss is theoretically possible. At 90% quality or higher the difference is practically invisible to the eye. Our tool converts at high quality first and then applies the compression level you choose, so using the default setting keeps the photo looking the way it did on your phone.

What gets lost in conversion?

For everyday sharing and uploads none of this matters, but keep your original HEIC files as a master copy if you plan to edit them professionally.

Converting many photos at once

Select as many photos as your device memory allows. On phones with limited RAM, process groups of 20 to 30 files at a time for the smoothest experience. After conversion, the ZIP download saves you from tapping download on every single file, and each file is numbered so nothing is overwritten.

Troubleshooting

A file shows an error. Occasionally a photo is damaged or uses a rare HEIC variant. The tool skips that file, marks it clearly and continues with the rest.

The JPG is bigger than I expected. JPG is less efficient than HEIC. Choose the Balanced or High compression setting to reduce the size.

The conversion is slow. HEIC decoding is demanding. Large batches on older phones can take a while, so keep the page open until the progress counter finishes.

HEIC vs JPG: which should you use?

Choose HEIC when you want to save storage on your own device and you only view photos on Apple products. Choose JPG when you plan to share, upload, print or edit photos on different devices, because every phone, computer, website and print shop accepts it. Many people keep HEIC in their camera for space and convert to JPG only when needed. That approach gives you the best of both formats: smaller storage on the phone and full compatibility when you share.

If you often upload to government portals or job sites, convert and compress in a single step, then check that the file name ends in .jpg. Some forms silently reject files with unusual extensions, and a quick check saves you from repeating the upload.
